History & Innovation

Chelmsford can be traced back to the original Roman settlement of Caesaromagus (Caser’s marketplace).  The Romans built a fort at the location of modern Chelmsford in 60 AD.  The modern town of Chelmsford was created in the Middle Ages.  It has grown and became Essex’s first city in 2012 during the Diamond Jubilee.  The Local Plan for Chelmsford plans significant growth in employment, housing, and infrastructure until 2036.

In 1899 Marconi opened the world’s first radio factory here.  Marconi, Crompton and Hoffman put Chelmsford on the World map as the birthplace of three key modern technologies: electrical engineering, telecommunications and precision bearing manufacture.  High-profile manufacturing business such as Teledyne e2v and BAE systems build on the legacy of Marconi and new high-tech businesses, such as Visteon and Battelle, continue to strengthen the local economy.  The global company Benefit Cosmetics now have their head office in the Marconi building- Chelmsford’s story continues to evolve.
